Kylian Mbappe will miss the remainder of France’s international break after Real Madrid confirmed that the forward has suffered a hyperextension in his left knee.
Mbappe scored the winning goal in France’s 1-0 victory over Turkiye, giving Zinedine Zidane a winning start in his first match as France manager. However, the Real Madrid star appeared to pick up an injury immediately after scoring and was substituted just five minutes later.
France subsequently confirmed that Mbappe had withdrawn from the squad and would return to Madrid for treatment. The French team initially described the issue as a tendon injury, while Zidane admitted after the match that the situation was "not going well."
Real Madrid have now confirmed that Mbappe has been diagnosed with a hyperextension in his left knee. The club have not announced an official recovery timeline, although reports from Spain suggest that the 27-year-old could be sidelined for around two weeks.
The injury comes during an impressive start to Mbappe’s season. He has already scored six goals in LaLiga, becoming the first Real Madrid player to reach six goals in the club’s opening five league matches since Karim Benzema achieved the same feat in the 2021-22 season.
Mbappe’s availability for Real Madrid’s first game after the international break is now uncertain. Carlo Ancelotti’s side are scheduled to face Villarreal on October 10, before taking on Roma in the Champions League four days later. Madrid will then welcome Sevilla to the Santiago Bernabeu the following weekend.
Real Madrid will be hoping Mbappe’s knee injury is not serious and that their leading goalscorer can return to action quickly.
