India suffered a heavy 6-1 defeat to Uruguay in their third and final friendly of the international window at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata.

Uruguay took the lead in the 11th minute when Darwin Nunez converted from the penalty spot after Pramveer Singh brought down Federico Vinas inside the box. India responded strongly, with Anirudh Thapa equalising in the 22nd minute after Ryan Williams’ effort was spilled by Uruguay goalkeeper Thiago Cardozo.

India continued to threaten, but a lengthy weather interruption halted the game in the 27th minute. The break disrupted India’s momentum, and Uruguay regained control soon after play resumed. Maxi Araujo restored their lead in the 29th minute, finishing from close range after a cross from Nahitan Nandez.

Uruguay led 2-1 at half-time despite India registering more shots in the opening period.

The visitors turned the game into a rout after the break. Rodrigo Zalazar scored a superb first-time strike in the 53rd minute to make it 3-1, before Araujo added his second six minutes later.

Juan Sanabria extended Uruguay’s advantage in the 71st minute, volleying home after Facundo Pellistri’s cross deflected into his path. Rodrigo Aguirre completed the scoring in the 86th minute with a curling finish into the top corner.

Ryan Williams continued to cause problems for the Uruguay defence until the final whistle, but India could not find a second goal.

The defeat ended an eventful international window for Khalid Jamil’s side, who faced three strong World Cup-level opponents. India began with a 1-1 draw against Panama before suffering a 4-0 defeat to five-time world champions Brazil and a 6-1 loss to Uruguay.
