India produced a spirited performance against higher-ranked Panama, holding the World Cup participants to a hard-fought 1–1 draw in their international friendly at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru.
Ranked 138th in the world, India showed defensive discipline against a Panama side ranked 44th and featuring 12 players with recent FIFA World Cup experience. The Blue Tigers took the lead in the 41st minute when Akash Mishra sent a long ball forward, releasing Ryan Williams, who timed his run perfectly before calmly beating goalkeeper Marcos Reyes to make it 1–0.
Panama responded strongly after the break, putting the Indian defence under sustained pressure and testing goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu. Their efforts finally paid off in the 68th minute when substitute Omar Javier Valencia fired a powerful long-range effort from outside the box to restore parity.
India refused to settle for a draw and continued to search for a late winner. Substitutes Edmund Lalrindika and Manvir Singh came close to finding the breakthrough, while Panama also created opportunities and forced several important saves from Gurpreet. Neither side, however, could produce the decisive goal.
The result provides India with a valuable confidence boost ahead of a demanding schedule in Kolkata. The Blue Tigers are set to face five-time world champions Brazil on October 3 before taking on Uruguay three days later on October 6.
