Australia wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis has been ruled out of the remaining two ODIs against South Africa after suffering a fractured right index finger during the series opener in Durban.

Inglis sustained the injury while keeping wickets but continued to take part in the match. He later featured in Australia's run chase, scoring three runs off eight deliveries after coming in at No. 4. However, further assessment has confirmed that the injury will keep him out of the second ODI in Johannesburg on September 27 and the third match in Potchefstroom on September 30.

The injury also raises concerns over Inglis' availability for Australia's upcoming Test series against South Africa, which begins in Durban on October 9. Although Alex Carey remains Australia's first-choice wicketkeeper, Inglis is part of the Test squad as his backup and could also be considered as a specialist batter if he recovers in time.

Cricket Australia confirmed that Inglis will return to Perth for medical scans. His availability for the Test series will be determined following further assessment and his recovery progress.

Australia have not yet announced a replacement for Inglis for the remaining ODIs. However, his injury could force the selectors to reassess their options ahead of the Test series if he fails to recover in time.

Australia currently trail the three-match ODI series 0-1 after suffering a 67-run defeat in the opening game in Durban. With two matches remaining, the visitors will need to respond quickly to keep the series alive.
