England have announced a 16-member squad for the upcoming ODI tri-series in Pakistan, with Jos Buttler and Jofra Archer set to miss the tournament.

Jos Buttler has been ruled out after suffering a hamstring injury during England’s second ODI against Sri Lanka. Jofra Archer, meanwhile, has been rested as part of England’s workload management following a busy summer schedule.

Leg-spinner Adil Rashid returns to the squad after missing the recent 2-1 ODI series victory over Sri Lanka because of a hand injury. All-rounder Sam Curran also makes his return after recovering from a groin problem.

Glamorgan leg-spinner Mason Crane has earned a recall to the England setup, eight years after his last international appearance. The 29-year-old has two T20I caps and was previously selected for the 2017-18 Ashes Test in Sydney. However, he is yet to make his ODI debut.

Uncapped Sussex pair James Coles and Henry Crocombe have also retained their places after featuring in England’s white-ball squads during the summer.

England men’s national selector Marcus North said the tri-series would give the squad valuable exposure to different playing conditions. He also highlighted the returns of Rashid and Curran, while explaining that Archer’s absence was aimed at managing his workload.

North also praised Crane’s performances for Glamorgan, saying the leg-spinner had consistently impressed across both formats and deserved another opportunity at international level.

The tri-series, involving England, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, will be played in Rawalpindi and Lahore. The teams will face each other twice in a double round-robin format, with the top two sides advancing to the final at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium on October 31.
