There is finally some good news for Indian cricket fans who have been waiting to see Jasprit Bumrah back in action.

Bumrah has been named in India’s squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Afghanistan, marking a significant step in his return from injury. However, there is one important condition attached to his selection — the fast bowler still needs fitness clearance from the BCCI Centre of Excellence.

The Afghanistan series will be played in Delhi on September 13, 15 and 17, giving India three opportunities to assess Bumrah ahead of a busy international season.

Bumrah’s return comes after a frustrating injury spell

Bumrah's recent run has been interrupted by a left-knee injury suffered during India's limited-overs tour of England. The injury also forced him to miss India's Test series against Sri Lanka, with the BCCI confirming last month that he had not fully recovered.

That makes his latest selection more than just another squad announcement.

For India, Bumrah is not simply another bowler. His ability to control the game with the new ball, deliver difficult overs at the death and create breakthroughs when a team needs them most makes his availability a major factor in India's plans.

But the fact that his name carries an asterisk is equally important. Bumrah has been selected subject to fitness clearance, meaning his place in the playing XI should not be treated as confirmed yet.

A strong-looking India squad

Shreyas Iyer will captain the side, with Tilak Varma named vice-captain. The squad also includes Abhishek Sharma, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Varun Chakaravarthy, Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana, among others.

The selectors have also marked Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar, Bumrah and Harshit Rana as players subject to fitness clearance.

That makes the Afghanistan series particularly interesting. While the headline will naturally be Bumrah's comeback, India will also be monitoring the fitness of several other players as the team continues to build depth across formats.

Why Bumrah's comeback matters

India have plenty of talented fast bowlers, but Bumrah brings something different.

His experience, control and ability to bowl in pressure situations have made him one of India's most important match-winners. After spending time away from competitive cricket, the immediate priority will not necessarily be how many wickets he takes.

It will be about whether his body is ready for the workload.

For Bumrah himself, the Afghanistan T20Is could therefore represent the beginning of a carefully managed return rather than an instant return to full intensity.

And that is probably the smarter approach.

A fully fit Bumrah is far more valuable to India than a rushed comeback that creates another injury setback.

Afghanistan series could be the perfect comeback window

Playing all three matches in Delhi gives India a controlled environment to assess Bumrah's fitness and match readiness.

If he receives clearance and is picked, the series could provide his first competitive opportunity to settle back into India's T20 setup.

For fans, though, the anticipation is already building.

After weeks of uncertainty surrounding one of India's biggest cricketing stars, Jasprit Bumrah is once again knocking on the door of the Indian T20I team.

The final decision will come down to fitness — but his inclusion in the squad is certainly a promising first step.

Bumrah isn't fully back yet. But he is getting closer.
