Jannik Sinner Withdraws From Shanghai Masters Due to Knee Injury
World No. 1 Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the upcoming Rolex Shanghai Masters, extending his absence from competitive tennis since winning the Wimbledon title in July.
Sinner has been sidelined with a knee injury and subsequently missed the North American hard-court swing, including the US Open, as well as the ATP 500 event in Beijing.
The Italian confirmed his Shanghai withdrawal on Saturday, expressing his disappointment at missing the tournament. Sinner said he had been looking forward to returning to Shanghai and thanked fans for their continued support, while hoping to compete at the event again next year.
Sinner enjoyed a memorable run in Shanghai in 2024, lifting the title after defeating Novak Djokovic in the final.
The 2026 Rolex Shanghai Masters is scheduled to take place from October 7 to 18. Djokovic, Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz, Ben Shelton, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Daniil Medvedev, Flavio Cobolli and defending champion Valentin Vacherot are among the leading names expected to compete.
Despite his recent absence, Sinner has enjoyed an outstanding 2026 season. According to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index, he has compiled a 44-3 record. He also won five ATP Masters 1000 titles in Indian Wells, Miami, Monte-Carlo, Madrid and Rome, completing the Career Golden Masters before securing his fifth Grand Slam title at Wimbledon.
Sinner's withdrawal will be a significant blow to the Shanghai field, with the tournament now set to proceed without the reigning world No. 1.
